In the wake of a heart-wrenching blow and freeing manifestation of love, 23-year-old figure skater Maxim Naumov recently delivered a truly touching performance in memory of his deceased parents, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, at the "Legacy on Ice" show in Washington. The couple were former world champion figure skaters themselves and well-respected coaches who lost their lives in a mid-air collision on January 29, 2025, sparking off mourning in the student community of figure skating and leaving their only son with the burden of anguish and despair.
A Heinous Loss for the Skating World
On that tragic day, American Eagle Flight 5342, carrying 64 passengers, collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter close to Reagan National Airport, wiping out everyone aboard. Among the 67 victims were 28 members of the figure skating community returning from a development camp in Wichita, Kansas, including Shishkova and Naumov. Six members of The Skating Club of Boston, where the couple coached, also mourned in the crash.
Maxim's Emotional Tribute
At the "Legacy on Ice" event set to honor the victims and the support of their families, Maxim took to the ice in a solo performance of "Ave Maria." His performance was a tribute to his parents, reflecting the deep bond they had and the far-reaching impact they had on his skating life. By the end of the performance, Maxim was unable to control his tears and knelt on the ice, stirring the audience and the skating community.
An Outpouring of Support
The skating community has rallied around Maxim in this difficult situation. Members of the extended family have been surrounded by an unwavering circle of support, ensuring he never walks alone on this path of grief. Notable mentions of individuals and institutions came from illustrious attendees, including Olympic champion Peggy Fleming, who spoke on similarities with tragedy: a past flight in 1961 that killed 18 members of the U.S. figure skating team. Fleming, who lost her coach in the 1961 crash, voiced her heartfelt sympathy for Maxim and all other affected families.
Touched by Excellence
Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were not only well-known athletes but also dedicated coaches whose contributions had changed and motivated many young skaters into their very being. It is upon them that many skaters owe their success. It is also through Maxim, who still resonates their passion and dedication to the craft, that their legacies continue. Heavy on his mind has been the tragedy in the days since then, Maxim took over the task of training his father's former students at the Skating Club of Boston, a testament to his power and commitment to preserving his parents' legacy.
Community Comes Together
The event was also referred to as "Legacy on Ice," more than just a tribute but truly a measure of the strength and unity found in the figure skating community. 15,000 attendees filled the Capital One Arena, where they raised $1.2 million for families affected or lost in the tragedies as well as for the first responders. Classic performances by Johnny Weir, Ilia Malinin, Amber Glenn, and many others could only be described as being committed to their fallen colleagues and friends. An encore airing will take place on NBC on March 30 to allow a broader audience to witness the emotional performances.
Moving Forward
Though suffering remains, the covering of such pain in response is a testimony to the strength and oneness of the great family called figure skating. The audacious act of Maxim Naumov reminds the public that unbreakable ties exist between skaters, as well as the depth of influence that a mentor or even a coach can impress on his student. As the community moves through the healing process, memories of those lost will inspire future generations to continue moving forward with the same passion, devotion, and love for the sport that Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov embodied.
In the face of such immense loss, the skating world stands united, honoring the legacies of its cherished members and supporting those left behind. The honor Maxim bestowed was a celebration of his parents' lives and was an example of the spirit of the skating community, a family bound by similar experiences and mutual respect and unwavering support.
