Currently, North Texas is under threat of a severe weather event, including tornadoes, hail, and clear winds associated with hurricanes, across the area. These are some of the thunderstorms accompanied by tornado watches and are part of several other alerts that the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued as an intense storm weather system moves through the area from March 4, 2025, Tuesday.
Tornado Watches and Warnings Issued
A tornado watch was issued by the NWS around 4:15 a.m. CST for a lot of counties including Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton until 11:00 a.m. CST. Simply put, the residents are informed regarding the favorable conditions for tornado development and are asked to be alert and have a plan for going to a shelter if needed.
At about 5:26 a.m. CST, there had been a report of severe thunderstorms, causing capability of tornadoes, detected to the west of Carrollton and east of Cedar Hill, traveling eastward at approximately 60 mph. Therefore, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, Denton, Collin, and Hunt counties until 6:30 a.m. CST. Residents have been notified to secure shelter in rooms away from windows.
Naturally, very strong winds gusted across the region because of the weather system. DFW International Airport reported a gust of 74 mph at 5:30 a.m. CST and a 78-mph gust at 5:45 a.m. CST, said by Dallas Love Field. These hurricane-direct winds account for such wide power outages, downed trees, and structural damage in many communities.
Heavy Rain and Large Hail
Tornadoes and damaging winds are not the only hazards storms brought to North Texas; large hailstones and heavy rainfall also followed. Reports say some places have made hailstones to size up to 2 inches in diameter. They also contribute to property damage and poor visibility on the roads. The heavy precipitation will likely contribute to flooding in lower areas, leading authorities to have citizens refrain from traversing submerged roadways.
Emergency Response and Safety Measures
Emergency personnel are working on damage assessments and attending to residents directly affected by the severe weather. The authorities have continued their warnings of heeding local news outlets and weather apps since the conditions change rapidly. The residents should be kept away from downed power lines, report outages to utility companies, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those not very mobile.
Residential Weather Forecast
The storm system should keep moving eastward throughout today, with its path coming very close to parts of East Texas and nearby states. Instead, the NWS wants those along the path of the storm to remain alert for additional watches and warnings. After this storm has passed, cooler temperatures and calmer conditions should bless North Texas and allow recovery and cleanup efforts.
Prepared to Prepare for Future Severe Weather Events
With the spirit of this season ushering in one severe weather event right after the other, a proper preparedness plan must be laid down for all residents. Such measures include locating safe shelters in advance and preparing lists of emergency equipment: a cellular phone and emergency contact numbers, potable water, first aid kit, etc.
