At a seismic shakeup for the Office of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), veteran spokesperson, Joshua Stueve, has set forth his resignation, writing, "neurotoxic culture". Stueve's departure casts a light on broader issues surrounding the way the Department works under the current regime.
Background and Career
Having served over 9 years on active duty, Joshua Stueve, as a Marine Corps veteran, continued. A native of Dayton, Ohio, with a high school diploma from Wayne High School in Huber Heights (1997). After high school, Stueve joined the Marine Corps as an infantryman, stationed in Spain, and deployed across Europe and the Mediterranean. He then went on to serve as the media director for the Marines in NY. Stueve then got a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University and continued to a master's degree at Purdue University.
Based on Stueve's LinkedIn, he has also served as the Public Affairs Officer for the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (2010-2014) and Director of Public Affairs for the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) from 2014 to 2021.
He began working in the DOJ in 2010, during the tenure of Barack Obama (former president). He served as spokesman for the ex-Special Counsel Robert Mueller, relating to the Trump-Russia investigation.
Resignation Details
However, Sensuously, Stueve described the inability to enjoy the work environment for the DOJ in his letter of resignation. He stated that he could not "continue to serve in such a hostile and toxic work environment," emphasizing that the leadership at the highest levels made it clear that career staff were neither welcomed nor valued. Stueve further explained that his decision was not related to the recently concluded presidential election results. He commented that it had been a privilege to work for various administrations, Republican and Democrat as well, and that in the past, career staff had been respected and treated with dignity under those administrations. However, he lamented, the absence of "basic decency" had been one which he alone had to police, since the Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, assumed office.
Implications for the DOJ
The departure of Stueve is just another of a number of departures and retirements at the DOJ. The department has been subjected to a succession of firings and resignations over the past few months and this context, as well as in ongoing discussion in a number of senior manager meetings, has given rise to "confusion" and "fear." The ensuing confusion leads us to question the degree to which the Department of Justice is going to be able to retain, with the approval of the public, under regulation the rule of law.
The void left by Joshua Stueve's exit has gaping openings in the Department of Justice, among others. Due to both his track record and commitment to service to the public, his departure is an unambiguous indication of what is going on inside the department. It emphasizes the urgent need for serious questioning, action, and reform so that DOJ personnel are once again supported in a respectful, collegial work space.
