Over the past few decades, the entertainment industry has undergone a drastic change, with Black women breaking into blockbuster roles by interrupting the hegemonic narrative and questioning the (representation) paradigm. These innovative performances not only demonstrate outstanding ability but, in fact, lead the way for artists and audiences to follow. This article explores the unique experiences of Cynthia Erivo, Zendaya and Brandy, and the extraordinary achievement of groundbreaking performances that have overturned the norm and redefined the landscape in their industry.
Cynthia Erivo: Defying Gravity and Stereotypes
Cynthia Erivo's depiction of Elphaba in the 2024 film "Wicked" is a demonstration of her ability and, (determined) to do good, genuine, and representational. Ostracized green-skinned witch Erivo tried, however, to stand by her own identity, as represented in the character. She suggested that micro-braids (a type of hairstyle with a tight relationship to Black culture and aesthetics) should be given to Elphaba in order to directly attach it to her origin. By which nature the choice spanned aesthetic choice but far beyond, it was a declaration, in that world, of claiming ownership over oneself.
Erivo's undertaking of the role was quite thorough. She subjected herself to intense physical, and vocal, training for which she would begin her training as early as 2 a.m., to stay on top of the often compressed schedule of shooting. Music when sprinting and cycling, lack of sleep, all of which she has put herself through in order to understand the limits of "what's possible", all of which she put to explore while staying true to the claim of being accurate and entertaining. Her grit paid off in the form of Oscar nominations for both herself and fellow performer Ariana Grande, Erivo was named as Oscar's Best Actress nominee.
Apart from her work in "Wicked," Erivo's career is a succession of pioneering performances. And having won a Tony for her role "In The Color Purple", and for playing Harriet Tubman in "Harriet", she repeatedly picks up projects that are strength and courage-based. Experiencing the disruption of boundaries and career success by rethinking the entertainment sector, her life exhibition marks the dramatics of being and doing and defines a new narrative of impact and expression in the entertainment industry.
Zendaya: From Disney Darling to Emmy-Winning Powerhouse
The career of Zendaya in movie acting can be noted as an example of the quality of versatility and depth. Following initial success in her career on Disney Channel she elegantly transitioned from less to more demanding assignments, showcasing her ability, versatility and commitment to her career. Her portrayal of Rue Bennett, a teenager grappling with addiction in the HBO series "Euphoria," earned her critical acclaim and made her the youngest woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
As well as the "Euphoria", her work in the film "Challengers" (Casey) is greatly adding to her status as a successful US artist industry. Its capacity for effortless transitions from TV to the cinematic screen to TV and for playing a variety of roles stands in contrast to its range of acting ability. Zendaya's agency is calculative in that it attempts to produce a broad range of Black women that are nuanced and defy the usual industry standards while also expanding the options for women of color.
Brandy: A Pioneering Princess
Long before the current wave of representation, Brandy Norwood made history with her portrayal of Cinderella in the 1997 television adaptation of Rodgers Hammerstein's classic musical. Brandey's performance, as the first black actress to ever appear in front of a global screen as Cinderella, was significant, as it offered a fresh and different view of a timeless story. This casting decision violated norms and offered a generation of young Black girls a princess who looked just like them.
Brandy's influence extends beyond her role as Cinderella. As a professional singer and actress, she has, on many occasions, used her platform to advocate for inclusivity and equity in the arts. Her trailblazing career laid the groundwork for subsequent artists to dream of representing themselves in roles typically held by others, underscoring the impact of inclusivity in the narrative.
The Power of Authentic Representation
What's at stake with these performances is not only the efforts made in terms of the skill demonstrated, but also the genuineness arising from the TV recording. When Brandy portrayed Cinderella, and Cynthia Erivo stepped into the role of Elphaba, they did so while embracing their natural hair and cultural identities. This choice cemented their position as authentic examples of beauty, power and belonging, breaking traditional Eurocentric beauty ideals, and responding to the question of what it means to be a new woman in Hollywood.
A New Era in Hollywood
The successes of the entertainment industry seen in the professional lives of Cynthia Erivo, Zendaya and Brandy, are representative of a greater trend in the field. Black actresses are no longer confined to stereotypical roles; instead, they are leading blockbuster films, winning prestigious awards, and, most importantly, telling diverse stories that resonate with audiences worldwide. This evolution is a sign of a greater number of and more inclusive Hollywoods, in which talent and authenticity trumps everything else.
It is such pioneering women's journeys that reveal what lies at the very center, the true nature of representational conversion in the creative domain. Breaking down walls and reimagining the boundaries of the conceivable, Cynthia Erivo, Zendaya, and Brandy not only propelled their careers to new levels but also paved the way for their successors among creative players. Their work is also a continuous incentive for inspiration and challenge for the industry to be inclusive of this diversity in every possible way so that the viewerâs experience of the screen reflects the diverse range of the human experience.
