Tragedy at Sea: Morgan Stanley Chairman and Wife Among Seven Dead in Sicily Yacht Sinking; $8.7M Estate to Be Inherited by Children

In the early hours of August 19, 2024, a massive maritime disaster played out off the coast of Porticello in Sicily as the 183-foot luxury yacht Bayesian went down in a very sudden and violent storm. That which included the loss of seven lives also saw the death of Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old Chairman of Morgan Stanley International and former CEO of Prudential Plc and his wife Judy. The pair had been on the yacht to celebrate the release of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, whom Bloomer's had known for some time.

The Bayliner, which is owned by Angela Bacares Lynch's wife, was at a distance of about 700 meters from shore when the yacht was hit by a waterspout, a tornado over water, which caused it to capsize and founder within minutes. At the time, there were 22 people on board the yacht, including 12 passengers and 10 crew. 15 people were saved, which included Bacares and a one-year-old British girl named Sophie, who had a very lucky escape when she was washed away by the storm and then reappeared to be reunited with her mother.

Investigations into the tragedy are still at large, which has seen Italian prosecutors begin an inquiry into what they think may have been a case of manslaughter. At present, the captain of the yacht and two of the crew are the focus of the probe, which is looking into issues of human error that may have played a role in the quick sinking of the ship. The Bayan's wreck is at a depth of 50 meters and is also under round-the-clock watch, in the midst of a $30 million effort to raise the ship for forensic analysis.

James, Helena, and Elizabeth. In the will, it was stated that his wife, Judy, would inherit the estate only if she outlived him by 90 days, which did not happen in this case of their simultaneous death.

Our parents were great people; they were an inspiration to many, but first of all, they dedicated themselves to their family and to being with their grandkids. We were together for 50 years, which is some comfort, that they are at peace now. This is a pain beyond measure.

Jonathan and other key players, including his wife Judy Bloomer, who did see the end as reported, also went out on the Bayesian. As we go into investigation and rescue mode, the world is watching this play out, which is in search of answers and closure to what transpired.
