South-Central Pennsylvania is presently experiencing a winter storm producing significant snowfall, freezing rain, and icing which has created travel risks, power failures and general disruption across the region. The weather service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the area warning residents of the expected hazards of the storm.
The storm system entered the area late Wednesday night, initially consisting of light snow which rapidly changed to sleet, as warmer air entered the lower levels of the atmosphere. Overnight, sleet coated roadways, making travel increasingly treacherous. With air temperatures remaining above freezing in the lower levels of the atmosphere, precipitation switched to freezing rain, causing substantial ice cover on surfaces.
Meteorologists from WGAL reported that "any light snow will quickly change to sleet as warmer air moves into the lower levels of the atmosphere". Sleet will provide a covering for the roads overnight, increasing the difficulty of travel. The type of weather regimes contributed by rainfall created an especially challenging and noxious sequence of temperatures across the entire region.
Impact on Transportation
Heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain made travel extremely unsafe conditions throughout South-Central Pennsylvania. Major highways and local roads became ice-covered, leading to numerous accidents and road closures. Agencies suggested non-essential travel should be restricted to residents, and where travel was deemed necessary then extreme precautious measures should be used.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) limited speeds and banned trucks on several interstates to minimise the risk of vehicular crashes. But that did not prevent EMS personnel from receiving overwhelming calls reporting traffic accidents and drivers suddenly stopped.
Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage
The weight of the accumulated ice caused significant damage to trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages across the region. Utility companies reported thousands of customers without electricity and dispatched crews to address the outages. Nevertheless, the dangerous situations inhibited restoration, and the people were encouraged to prepare for a long duration of the power shortage.
Other than service outages, the resulting ice shedding posed a threat to the infrastructure as it brought down trees which covered the road and damaged the road itself. Municipal administrations put public works crews to work sanitation debris removal to protect the residents from danger.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures would rise out of freezing during the morning and early afternoon and reach the high 40s. This warming effect was already anticipated to transform the freezing rain into the plain rain and could result in improved road conditions in the afternoon.
However, as documented by meteorologists, the primary ice load would still be a concern, even on untreated surfaces. Residents were advised to be watchful and to monitor releases from authoritative edicts.

Protect Property: Defend your home by wiping all branches that overhang the roof of your house, make sure anything that is loose does not blow away and your gutters and drains are clear of water and ice dams in case the hose freezes to protect against water penetration.
Meteorologists are amid the ongoing impacts of the storm but at the same time also paying attention to other weather-related events which could affect South-Central Pennsylvania in the coming days. Residents are encouraged to continue to be prepared for any further incidents and to continue to monitor updated weather conditions.
