Across Saudi Arabia, the filmmaking community is undergoing a huge upheaval from the 35-year closedown of the cinema to a lively hub of creation and exhibition for filmmakers and film fans. This evolution is characterized by profound investments in the phenomenon, interaction with authorities in other disciplines of the same knowledge, and a bustling scene attracting global interest.
Lifting the Cinema Ban: A New Era Begins
In 2018 Saudi Arabia banned cinemas for 35 years and this move represented the government's willingness to diversify the economy and promote cultural expression. The reinstatement decision therefore built the basis for the creation of the Saudi Film Commission in 2020, which will oversee the Saudi film industry creation as well as collaborate with Saudi filmmakers.
Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating for Growth
One of the key achievements in this process is the recent strategic collaboration between the Saudi Film Commission and the Korean Film Council. Signed in February 2025, this MoU is intended to foster collaboration within the film industry while facilitating cultural sharing, as well as to drive industry development in Saudi Arabia and South Korea. The collaboration includes educational programs, workshops, master classes and mentorship experiences all designed and taught by professionals in the film business, which all serve to model a shared experience in order to advance the film community.
Cultural Events: Showcasing Talent and Innovation
The Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah has now become a pillar of the cinema renaissance in Saudi Arabia. For the duration of this festival there is a truly globally diverse selection of films, that includes a space to showcase not just new talent, but also established talent which is hoping to gain a new audience. In particular, the 2024 copy featured over 120 long movies from 81 countries (that) reflect the expanding role of the country in the global film business.
Economic Impact: A Billion-Dollar Opportunity
The future of the motion picture industry in Saudi Arabia is promising to play a significant role in the growth of the Saudi economy. Analyses predict the financial income (in boxes) that the cinema industry is poised to generate up to 2030 and can go up to USD 1. Specifically, 5 billion and the box office market by itself will grow to USD 950 million. This will continue to create a large number of job vacancies and an array of related job occupations (e.g., tourism and hospitality).
Talent Development: Nurturing the Next Generation
The Saudi Film Commission, it is applied the principle of developing national talent via a number of initiatives. In particular, the Misk Screenwriting Program gives participants the opportunity to create short screenplays, mentoring them through every step of the writing process, and adapting their narrative concepts into movie scripts.
Global Recognition: Saudi Films on the International Stage
Saudi cinema is now achieving foreign recognition with popular success such as "Mandoob" (Night Courier). Directed by Ali Kalthami, the film became the highest-grossing Saudi film in December 2024, reflecting the kingdom's growing cinematic prowess.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Even though the industry has rapidly expanded it is still quite a young field in Saudi Arabia in its several domains such as cultural sensibility and ecological extent of the infrastructural framework. However, the impact not only of the set of guidelines described by what this governmental intervention in Vision 2030 provides, i.e., a target of designing and diversifying the economy and fostering creativity, but also of the target of creative production, is not that of a motivator but can be considered objectives that need to be achieved.
A Cinematic Renaissance
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the film industry is rapidly expanding and promoted by the establishment of strategic collaborations, cultural initiatives, and investments in a broader pool of industry professionals. Nevertheless, although the Kingdom still enjoys support in its cinematic fate, it will undoubtedly be able to play its part in global cinema and thus develop new avenues to the future of filmmaking and film viewing in the world.
