Richard Chamberlain, Iconic Star of 'Dr. Kildare' and 'The Thorn Birds,' Passes Away at 90

Richard Chamberlain, famed actor of "Dr. Kildare", "Shogun", and "The Thorn Birds", passed away at 90 years of age from complications following a stroke on March 29, 2025, in Waimanalo, Hawaii.

Born George Richard Chamberlain on March 31, 1934, in Beverly Hills, California, initial attempts in art found his inclination, instead, towards acting. Chamberlain entered television and film after serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and co-founding a theater group based in Los Angeles.

His dramatic appointment was in the leading role of the NBC medical TV drama "Dr. Kildare", from 1961 to 1966. His compassionate Dr. Kildare catapulted him to stardom and teenage heartthrob status, with a Golden Globe for Best Male TV Star in 1963.

Becoming the "King of the Miniseries" by the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chamberlain starred in the grand epics of "Centennial" (1978) and "Shogun" (1980) before "The Thorn Birds" (1983). His role in "The Thorn Birds" as Father Ralph de Bricassart earned him another Golden Globe and established him as a versatile actor with the ability to play challenging roles.

Chamberlain worked outside of television in the theatre and films. He had movie roles in "The Towering Inferno" and "The Three Musketeers" and performed in stage productions of "Hamlet" and "My Fair Lady". His portrayal of Hamlet in a British stage production in 1969 was especially noteworthy; he was the first American actor since John Barrymore to be given the role in the British theatre.

In the private sphere, Chamberlain had to cope with hiding his sexuality in a time in which it could ruin an actor's career if he were to be open about it. He came out in his autobiography in 2003, "Shattered Love", in which he discussed the pressures he faced and his journey toward self-acceptance.

He is survived by his partner of many years, actor and producer Martin Rabbett. Rabbett shared, "Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings, lifting him to his next great adventure."

Richard Chamberlain's contributions to the entertainment industry have burned an indelible mark, and his legacy will ever inspire the future generations of actors and the audience alike.
