President Trump Signs Executive Order to Rename Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America'

January 20, 2025 - Too much politics, President Donald Trump on day one of his return to the White House, signed an executive order to rename the republic of mexico's "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America. This decision is in line with his administration's overall agenda of downplaying American foreign entanglement while highlighting the country's sovereignty and identity.

The Announcement

During a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort earlier this month, President Trump stated, "We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America is such a beautiful name. And it's appropriate."

The Gulf of Mexico, a basin of the ocean extensively surrounded on the north by the North American landmass has borne the name of the GC for centuries. It borders five U.S. states - (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, and Mexico and Cuba). The denomination "Gulf of Mexico" has been employed since the 1540s and is a correct representation of the historical and cultural nature of the region.

Legislative Support

Following the president's announcement, congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga). vowed to back the proposal by agreeing to introduce a bill to enable a name change. However, she emphasized the importance to optimally align federal agencies and resources to the name just established saying she will start making necessary funding adjustments so as to make this happen.

Implementation and Challenges

The implementing change to the federal documents and maps would be overseen by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (investigatory), the federal entity responsible for unifying geographic names. Historically, such renaming efforts have been complex. For example, the BGN has recently for some time been planning to rename the Persian Gulf but, in the end, simply continued to use its historical name. [M] This precedent suggests that while US may domesticate the new name, its global acceptance is unknown.

International and Domestic Reactions

The proposal has elicited a range of responses: Endorsement of renaming is sustained for the reasons of the reinforcement of national pride and for the reason of the proper application of the same to the enormous economic and strategic importance of the United States to the region.

Arguments have been put forward that the change is unnecessary and diplomatically burdensome in the case of adjacent countries in particular, Mexico. They further report the logistical challenges and costs of replicating the official documentation, maps, and educational literature.

Broader Policy Context

This executive order is one of a number of steps taken by President Trump to redefine American identity and US interests. He issued the same day orders that restored "Mount McKinley" to Alaska's Denali and imposed tight trade tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. These actions demonstrate the eagerness of the administration to national autonomy and economic nationalism.

The renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" is a major, perhaps ill advised step as President Trump seeks to make Americanism again and again a dominant agenda. However as the roll out process gets underway it will become highly necessary to keep an eye on what are as well the domestic and international consequences of this decision, in particular with regard to diplomatic affairs and with the operability, as meaning, of the large scale implementation of this change.
