Destructive Wildfire in Carolina Forest
Destructive wildfire is currently burning through the Carolina Forest neighbourhood south of Myrtle Beach, SC, expanding quickly beyond 1200 acres, and causing extensive evacuations in several neighbourhood jurisdictions. The inferno which started on Saturday 1 March 2025 has been sustained by a combination of drought and high winds that make this a very precarious one for firefighters and the rest of the emergency response groups.
Rapid Escalation and Immediate Threats
The wildfire's rapid spread has shocked locals and officials. First reported to be 600 acres late Saturday night, the fire expanded more than double in size overnight, to 1,200 acres by Sunday morning. It is at this exponential rate that residential properties are endangered and there is immediate call for residents to be evacuated.
Evacuated Neighborhoods
Evacuation of certain communities in the Carolina Forest region has occurred as the wildfire moves into the homes of suburbs. The affected neighborhoods include:
- Walkers Woods
- Avalon
- Indigo Bay
- The Farm
- Summerlyn
- Spring Lake
- Waterford
Evacuation is being enforced for certain of the buildings at that site and residents are being advised to seek refuge in a shelter and stay clear of the damaged areas in order to facilitate relief operations.
Emergency Shelters and Assistance
In the aftermath of evacuations, emergency relief shelters have been furnished with shelter for displaced persons. The Carolina Forest Recreation Center, located at 2254 Carolina Forest Blvd, is an extensive storm shelter with cots, food, and tactical gear. As of now, 52 persons have taken refuge in this structure.
Animal owners, a VCA Palmetto Animal Hospital (HHH) is offering boarding as protection for the animals' health and safety during this event. For residents who require the transport of their animals, please contact the hospital by phone at 843-903-1900 with the information.
Firefighting Efforts and Challenges
Members of Horry County Fire Rescue and firefighters from other counties and the South Carolina Forestry Commission are battling the fire at the scene. In spite of their tireless work, the fire is still 0% contained according to the most up to date reports. Extreme weather conditions (low relative humidity and high wind speed) have further exacerbated the containment effort.
To increase the rate of firefighting, new equipment (e.g., tractors), and aerial support are being introduced. State Senator Luke Rankin declared that air assets will be landing imminently to do final hot spots, while also reminding people to heed evacuation orders for their own protection.
Statewide Burn Ban and Public Safety Measures
Responding to the growing threat of wildfire, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has imposed a statewide burn ban, aimed at perceived wildfire risk. The governor specifically acknowledged the bravery and hard work that is being exhibited by the first responders to their ongoing struggle and work to contain wildfires and defend their communities.
Blockades on the roadways have also been set up to assist emergency needs. International Drive (corridor of the neighborhood) has been permanently sealed from Highway 90/Western terminus of International Drive to the vicinity of Ocean Bay school. In order to allow unrestricted movement of emergency vehicles and personnel, residents are recommended not to go into the affected areas in their own protection.
Community Support and Resources
The local population has risen to the occasion to help the wildfire evacuees. Corporations and organisations are helping displaced populations (e.g., subsidized housing, other needs). Vacation Myrtle Beach, a community hotel group, is offering reduced rates across some properties to evacuees and is waiving all other fees until March 6. Proof of residence is required to access these accommodations.
Safety Precautions and Recommendations
Residents living and/or in the Carolina Forest neighborhood are asked to be prudent and comply with:
- Follow Evacuation Orders: If evacuation is ordered at your location, evacuate immediately for the sake of everyone.
- Stay Informed: It is to be monitored continuously with respect to information from local authorities and the media on the current condition of the wildfire and affected zones.
- Avoid Affected Areas: Do not attempt to travel into evacuated areas, unless officials have made it safe to do so.
- Prepare for Potential Evacuations: People living in neighbouring residential streets are and should be prepared how to act in an emergency in the case of an extended order to evacuate.
The Ongoing Wildfire Threat
The Carolina Forest wildfire represents a significant and evolving threat to the Myrtle Beach region, with thousands of acres burned and numerous communities impacted. Cooperative work among firefighters, emergency and community personnel is also essential for fighting the fire and protecting residents. Whenever necessary, the population living in the area should be informed, follow the instructions of the government, and support each other in this difficult moment.
