DOX will have a crucial role in 2025 by merging advanced technologies with current global challenges. Running from March 19 to 30, the festival will present a rich variety of 71 pictures across 6 award categories, including 56 world premieres, 12 international premieres, and 3 European premieres. This year's festival is centered on issues of hybridity between artificial intelligence (AI) and documentaries and unyielding adherence to climate justice.
AI's Transformative Role in Documentary Filmmaking
DOX 2025, storytelling as if non-fiction for the twenty-first century lies at the heart of the discussion, with the use of AI as a tool for disruption of traditional models of non-fiction narratology, as the main theme. The festival/CPH: CONFERENCE "curated" by industry expert Mandy Chang Co. will feature programming devoted to the role of AI in documentary practice. These represent discussions with the purpose of giving the filmmakers ideas about how they could use AI to give depth to the narratives, speed up production, and engage audiences in creative ways.
One notable initiative is the CPH: LAB, an educational initiative that has nominated 9 prototypes, and multidisciplinary, internationally, immersive documentaries. Running from September 2024 to February 2025, this program combines onsite and online workshops, guiding participants in creating prototypes that integrate AI technologies. Such works should be presented during the festival, as a teaser to the audiences, of what AI might be capable of achieving, in storytelling.
Championing Climate Justice Through Film
DOX 2025 has led to a series of films and soundbites that are all about climate justice. The aim of these contributions is to show the experience of communities and which are particularly affected by damaged and degraded environments, and to offer potential constructive/actionable solutions.
DOX was created with the aim to transmit a deep understanding of climate justice and human rights and elicit an audience primed and ready to take action on it in a substantive and lasting way.
Spotlight on Investigative Journalism
In DOX 2025, a module of the curriculum is something to this central aspect of media. Over the course of a series of movies and screenings across the festival, the collective of filmmakers will confront the challenges the press is forced to navigate in order to bring it to light, the ethical challenges they are required to take on in order to do so, and the societal impact of their work.
The CPH: CONFERENCE will have sessions in which veteran journalists and filmmakers who discussed their professional careers describe the interplay between investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking. These debates concern the nature and generation of tools and knowledge that could enable the next generation of storytellers to undertake transformational investigative activity.
Opening Film: "Facing War"
"Facing War", directed by Tommy Gulliksen, has been chosen as the opening film to set up the tone of the festival. This documentary provides a unique inside look at the internal workings of the alliance in an era of stress and attempts by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to bring member countries together in the face of global war. The movie offers an extraordinary chance to see the top-level interactions of diplomacy between the heads of state and as such, (offers a unique insight into) leadership issues, the diplomacy art, as well as the academic disciplines of international relations, the highly sophisticated and multifaceted area of international relations.
A Platform for Emerging Voices
Beyond showcasing established talents, CPH: DOX 2025 is training the next generation of documentary filmmakers. NEXT: WAVE Award category is awarded to the talented filmmakers who shine and become contributors to share their vision in the world. This work illustrates the festival's ongoing dedication to the inclusion and advancement of the documentary universe and the development of the next generation of storytellers.
Engaging the Global Audience
Understanding the importance of accessibility, CPH: DOX 2025 has expanded its reach beyond Copenhagen. Based on digital platforms and collaborations with institutions worldwide, the festival strives to have a reach of a global audience, building up a network of documentary lovers all over the world. Unambiguously, this framework guarantees that the strong narratives and conversations coming out of the parties will reach this planet, inspiring action at the global scale, at the national level, and through the internet.
CPH: DOX 2025 has reached the apex of documentary production today, achieving a perfect blend of new technology and deep social commentary. By addressing the application of AI in storytelling, climate justice and the enforcement of editorial principles in investigative journalism, the festival not only reflects the present state of affairs but also anticipates a solution. In both the registrants and the world spectators there will be but cannot be avoided, a shift of meaning, doubt of assumptions, and arousal.
