For the first time ever, the 2025 NBA All-Star Week included an exhibition four-team mini-tournament at the San Francisco Chase Center to reboot the party event. However, this new format evoked opposite feelings among game players and viewers.
A New Era for the All-Star Game

Each game was played to a target score of 40 points, eliminating the traditional game clock to foster a more dynamic and engaging atmosphere. In addition, Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, as well as the winners of the Rising Stars game, Candace Parker, captained the menâs and womenâs teams. This format aimed to infuse fresh energy into the All-Star proceedings and address longstanding critiques about the game's waning competitiveness.
Team Shaq's Dominance
Shaquille O'Neal's team, the "Shaq's OGs", emerged as the tournament winners through a synthesis, not only, of veteran players, but of their tactical prowess. The set consisted of lights, e.g., Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Jayson Tatum. In the championship game, in a bloodbath, Team Shaq dominated "Chuck's Global Stars", led by Charles Barkley, 41-25). Curry's all-star game, which saw him score a game-high 12 points (and a tournament high 20 points over the course of the event) awarded him the MVP award of the All-Star Game. Financial Incentives and Competitive Drive
To improve the bait, the NBA has put together a $1.8 million incentive fund. Each member of the winning team got an award of USD $125,000, while each member of the runner-up team got USD $50,000. Semistamp winners from the semifinals lost $25,000 a player. Having that as monetary motivation, it was constructed that this All-Star Game would encourage competition and discourage this "low-effort-playing" of which previous All-Star Games have been notorious. Not only did monetary gains provide an additional stimulus, but ultimately the success of the format is in how it is received by both players and fans.
Standout Performances
Beyond Curry's MVP-worthy display, other players made significant impacts. Jayson Tatum added 15 points in the deciding one to go with Curry's. Conversely, Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs lived up to his hype, headlining "Chuck's Global Stars" with 11 points in the endgame and contributing with crucial rebounds and blocks on defense. His work hinted at an excellent future and a peek into his talent to play in future All-Star games as a cornerstone.
The Future of the All-Star Game
With the design of the 2025 All-Star Game in an experimental setting, there has been debate about the way the game should be organised on a more general basis. Despite the mini-tournament tackling problems in competition and its audience appeal, the reactions are mixed and some changes may be needed.
