In headlines that have startled the baseball world, the Baltimore Orioles unceremoniously offloaded manager Brandon Hyde after abysmally opening their 2025 MLB season with a 15-28 record. This event comes just two years after Hyde led the Orioles to a 101-win season, an American League East title, and the 2023 AL Manager of the Year award.
According to the Orioles' front office, led by Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias, poor performance from the team warranted leadership change. "As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility. Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.," Elias said while acknowledging the difficult decision.
Owner David Rubenstein also commented, saying: "Brandon Hyde is someone I have come to know and deeply admire, not only for his extensive knowledge of baseball, but especially for his extraordinary leadership as a manager. I am sincerely grateful for his significant ... ."
Hyde was hired by the Orioles in 2019 when the franchise was undergoing a significant rebuilding process. Under his stewardship, the team steadily moved toward its first winning season since ... and a division title in 2023, but much of that momentum did not carry into 2025, as the Orioles have had struggles both in terms of part performance and lack of overall strength.
From the team's perspective, not only does the pitching staff have the lowest ERA in the league at 5.33, but it is further hurt by injuries to key pitchers Grayson Rodriguez and Zach Eflin. Offense-wise, only a few problems, such as Gunnar Henderson, Cedric Mullins, and Ryan O'Hearn, seem to cut the mustard as injuries to Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser left the whole lineup depleted.
The Orioles have appointed their third-base coach Tony Mansolino as the interim manager. Moreover, the team has let go of its major league field coordinator and catching instructor, Tim Cossins. A move is taken in a new direction for the Orioles-as they try to salvage what is left of the season and realign with their long-term goals.
This also marks the reason behind the axe falling on Hyde, which had raised expectations on the club after its recent successes. This is a step towards returning to contention for the organization as it now seeks to stabilize performance across the board while assessing future management options.
Fans and analysts alike will watch closely what next steps the Orioles take, as the team goes through this transition looking to reestablish itself within the competitive forces in the East of the American League.
