Daughters-in-law who have stayed with their in-laws have been telling the struggles of their work and in-laws' life imbalances. Mostly mothers of their husbands are blamed for this struggle because they are the ones who had gone through the same and they repeat the tradition with their daughters-in-law too. Non-working women have the worst situation around them but since they have accepted it as if it is "normal" they have been going on living with this for ages. But working women who are aware of patriarchal social norms therefore this is stressful and exhausting for them to bear with this. Here is what working women have told us about their experiences living with their in-laws.
Even if you are up for a small business your work is not prior
Women who wanted to run a bakery or a parlor on their own were told that their work will contribute nothing to the house expenses but they can start it as their hobby if they are left with any time after the house chores.
You are not supposed to leave this city for a job
Why? Because your husband is working here and who is going to serve him when he will come late in the night. Since your husband's workplace is more important than yours so you can not leave the city for the job even if your earnings are much better.
If you are WFH then it's not a job
Women who are staying with their inlaws and working from home are expected to clean the house first and prepare food for everyone because working from home is not considered a job for them, it is something that can be done easily at any given time.
Your husband is having an affair because of your work and lifestyle
Working women get to hear this a lot when their husbands cheat on them. In-laws always have this reason to justify their son's extramarital affair. Because her time is only limited to their sons and children after marriage. So if she is focused on her work it is going to affect their already spoiled sons' minds.
