People are always found talking about equality when it comes to doing house chores. They like talking about how progressive they are but the reality is different from this. Surveys and studies have shown that men are changing attitudes toward women, they talk openly about gender roles.
We have seen that people are supporting women to follow their passion, getting equally paid, and their political views. But if you ask some kids about the roles of in-home arrangements, they will tell how their fathers earn and run the house where mothers are known as housewives or religious women.
Even our Highschool essay on "My Family" made us so used to it. The world has come so far but women's positions have remained unchanged.
During the lockdown in India when people were struck at their homes, men slowly started helping with house chores as a timepass or when they felt bored. After a few days, they started enjoying it.
But again it turned out as a showoff when they uploaded their pictures from the kitchen to tell how much they do care about their women. Some of them were honest, they realized the harsh truth whilst some made fun of women saying cooking isn't as hard as the work they do.
When it comes to parenting responsibilities of mothers and fathers, men are applauded for doing the bare minimum whilst women donât even receive the appreciation they deserve. They'd be told You are so lucky that your husband is cooking for you.
A man is treated so nicely for preparing a lunchbox for his child but not a woman because thatâs seen as her âdutyâ.
If we talk about earning, they will tell you Look I have allowed you to work. It is not okay if a woman leaves her child at home and goes to work but the same is normalized for men.
A woman is not allowed to forget things to do but a man can because he is overburdened and has to look after the family.
Men can just relax after a tiring day but it is only a womanâs responsibility to complete all the household chores before leaving for an important meeting and clean up the rooms and kitchen after she returns.
What can we do to bring change?
